Product Review

With iTunes 10, the mega media player is on the road to becoming a general entertainment hub. ITunes is available for Windows 7, Vista, XP, and, of course, for Mac in users. Upon startup, you are given the option to add music from your computer into the player. If need be some files, such as WMA, can be converted and then added to iTunes. By default iTunes will make itself your default media player, so if you don't wish this to happen, deselect that option during pre-installation.

Aside from access to the gargantuan iTunes store, a well-organized range of podcasts, and a nifty interface, the media player is stuffed with features. Once you launch the player, you can check out the tutorials it offers. This will help you find the features most important to you.

See what's going on at iTunes U, which features educational content, such as lectures, audio books, language lessons, and tours. ITunes Genius searches your music library for songs that will go well together. Then it organizes those songs into a playlist, just like listening to a radio station culled entirely from your music collection. You can also listen to streaming radios stations. Access hundreds of radio stations across an alphabet of genres. And if your favorite radio station isn't included in iTunes, you can add it by choosing Open Stream in the Advanced menu.

The feature garnering the most buzz is Ping, an optional social networking service for music, which is built into iTunes. It's a great idea, although it's not integrated with other social networks. Other new features include better ways to find your music with the Album List view. Plus the album art pop-up has music controls. There's also an option to hide the checkboxes in list view and some of the icons in the sidebar.

ITunes also now offers HD TV show rentals, though this feature is mostly aimed toward Apple TV owners. AirPlay is a wireless streaming feature that you can use to stream iTunes music onto compatible third-party audio devices. Another plus that comes with iTunes 10 is the addition of iCloud, making it easier for you to download music, books, and apps onto multiple devices.

Though some users complain about the growing bulk of iTunes, most perceive a performance boost and faster opening and loading times with the latest version. There's still no ability to deeply personalize or change colors in the iTunes, but the media player does continue to improve with each new version.
